Nutritional Seaweed Soup (미역국: miyeokguk) - It is a Korean tradition to feed the mom right after birth with this specific soup served with rice. There’s fiber for easier bowel movements, iron to support energy and blood health, calcium for your bones, iodine for baby’s brain development, and hydrating aspect from the seaweed. The soaked seaweed hydrates the body along with the broth, giving you a double-dose of nourishment and fluid. And for nursing moms, extra hydration means more milk!
Ingredients: garlic, seaweed, beef (can substitute for chicken or no meat), soy sauce, sesame oil, beef broth, and salt to taste.
Rich in fiber, omega 3, protein, vitamins A, B1, B12, C, D and E, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid and folic acid.
Finally, the Korean tradition of eating seaweed soup on a birthday stems from the country's history of childbearing, being a way of honoring mothers who brought people into the world with love and sacrifice.
Koreans believe that the cold air chills the joints and separated ligaments from childbirth, which disrupts the healing process.
Anything cold is ideally avoided during the first 21 days. Since the whole body was affected by pregnancy and birth, the consumption of cold foods and beverages is thought to delay the healing process.
Koreans firmly believe exposing your body to cold would result in "Saan-hoo-poong" which is unexplained joint pain and body ache after delivery. There are also western women who complain of unexplained body ache. In fact, it is medically groundless to say being exposed to cold is the cause. "Saan-hoo-poong" could be from strenuous housework and care of babies when women are not fully recovered from childbirth. However, it is noteworthy that keeping your body warm definitely helps you relax. Imagine being outside in the cold winter, how you hunch your shoulders and shiver. As long as it is not sweating hot, pleasant warmth helps new mothers' restoration of energy.
